A. NONFICTION WRITING
What is nonfiction writing?
Nonfiction is a broad genre of writing that encompasses all books that aren’t rooted in a fictional
narrative.
Nonfiction writing can be based in history and biography, it can be instructional, it can offer
commentary and humor, and it can ponder philosophical questions.
If a book is not rooted in a made-up story, then it is nonfiction.
B. SUBGENRES OF NONFICTION
1. BIOGRAPHY
It is a form of literature, commonly considered nonfictional, the subject of which is the life of an
individual. One of the oldest forms of literary expression, it seeks to re-create in words the life of a human
being—as understood from the historical or personal perspective of the author—by drawing upon all
available evidence, including that retained in memory as well as written, oral, and pictorial material.
