Biography
Attorney turned filmmaker, Kayvan Mashayekh, began his career by writing, producing and directing an epic, independent feature film called, “The Keeper: The Legend of Omar Khayyam,” which Premiered at the Moscow Film Festival in 2005 and had a successful theatrical run in the US for 53 weeks in 14 separate cities.
Mashayekh was mentored by Branko Lustig (legendary Oscar Winning Producer of “Gladiator” and “Schindler’s List”), who noticed him as a prize winner at a pitch competition at the 2007 Middle East International Film Festival in Abu Dhabi and subsequently took him in under his wing as an apprentice producer developing Lustig’s slate of international, studio grade projects.
Mashayekh is the Founder of Producers Without Borders a trusted, private network of curated international producers sponsored by major corporate entities such as United Airlines, Radisson Collection, and The Hollywood Reporter. The most recent credited example of the power of the network can be seen in the Sony Pictures Classic film, “Freud’s Last Session” (2023) starring Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode, where Mashayekh is Executive Producer with several of his colleagues from the closed group. The Keeper: The Legend of Omar Khayyam is an independently released drama film about the life of the famous Persian intellectual Omar Khayyám.[1] It was directed by Kayvan Mashayekh and stars Vanessa Redgrave and Moritz Bleibtreu.[2] It was released in 2005.
Plot
[edit]Kamran is a 12-year-old boy in the present day who discovers that his ancestor is the 11th-century mathematician, astronomer, and poet of Persia, Omar Khayyam. The story has been passed down in his family from one generation to another, and now it is his responsibility to keep the story alive for future generations. The film takes us from the modern day to the epic past where the relationship between Omar Khayyam, Hassan Sabbah (the original creator of the sect of Assassins) and their mutual love for a beautiful woman separate them from their eternal bond of friendship.
Filmed almost entirely on location in Samarkand and Bukhara, Uzbekistan.
