He's been with the school system for 11 years now. He's had a career in education for 51 years.
He came to the school district back in the summer of 2005. Since then he has been at the helm of several changes for the county - seeing the highest graduation rate for Savannah-Chatham schools in over a decade in 2011. This rate has now surpassed the state's graduation rate for the second year in a row and is in line with the national average.
He's also leaving at a time when the dropout rate declined and is now below both the state and national numbers. Enrollment is up for the county, growing at a rate of approximately one elementary school each year.
Superintendent Lockamy will finish out this school year. His retirement becomes effective on May 31 of next year.
