The successful novelist Ronald Balson does not yet feel comfortable calling himself a successful novelist. He still considers himself a lawyer, an understandable label since it is one that he has worn for more than 40 years.
“But I’ve always wanted to write a novel,” he says.
It took him a while, but he now has had three terrific novels published in a later-in-life career that has been at once astonishing and inspiring, in that don’t-give-up-your-dreams fashion.

Born in Chicago 72 years ago, he moved to the suburbs while still in grade school, went to Highland Park High School, played a lot of golf. His mother’s desire to have him become a doctor steered him to Tulane University in New Orleans, where he quickly tired of pre-med and focused his academic eye on English and history, earning a degree in the latter.
Returning to Chicago, he spent seven years as a teacher in the city’s public school system while earning a law degree from DePaul University at night. He then became a litigator and trial lawyer in private practice and has been at it ever since — still is.
About a decade ago, a complicated telecommunications case took him to Poland, and that is where he found his new literary life.
