    Après avoir appris un peu du dessin et les premiers principes de l’art de peindre, Claude François alla se perfectionner à Paris auprès de Simon Vouet. Dans l’atelier de ce maître, François avait contracté la plus fidèle, la plus immédiate manière de son maître, et il la garda toute sa vie. Il paraît cependant que de Paris il était allé à Rome, pour y prendre le goût des grands maîtres, et c’est là qu’il aurait peint, à l’âge de vingt ans, une Assomption de la Vierge pour le maître-autel des Jacobins d’Amiens; ce tableau, copié d’après Bassan, était estimé en 1635, six mille écus.

    De Rome, Claude François revint à Paris, où il ne tarda pas à se faire une réputation flatteuse. Malgré les avantages que lui promettaient ses talents, il prit l’habit religieux, à l’âge de trente ans, chez les Récollets du faubourg Saint-Martin, où il prononça ses vœux en 1644. On raconte qu’étant tombé du haut du pont du Cange dans la Somme, à l’âge de douze à quinze ans, il n’échappa à la mort que par une espèce de miracle, et

    Claude Marie Antoine François was born on February 1, 1939 in Ismailia, Egypt, where his French-born father worked as a shipping traffic controller on the Suez Canal. His Italian-born mother encouraged him musically, getting him into violin and piano lessons; François preferred the drums, however. When Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal in 1956, François and his family were repatriated to France, settling in Monte Carlo.

    His father fell seriously ill not long after, and François was forced to get a job and help support the family. He worked in a bank by day, but soon caught on as a drummer with local orchestras on the hotel and nightclub circuit. He made his professional debut with Louis Frozio in 1957, over his father's strenuous objections. Around 1959, François started to try his hand at singing, and proved a hit with resort audiences around the French Riviera.While working the clubs, he met Janet Woollacott in 1959, an English dancer whom he married in 1960.
